Every talented musician knows that the piano is one of the best instruments to play, but private lessons can be a time-consuming, costly obstacle. Mahalo’s Learn Piano app makes playing look like a daunting feat made easy. You’ll never need a private lesson to rock at piano again!
The five-finger position is traditionally the most common way to play keys on the piano. It’s a good way to know exactly where to place your fingers on the keyboard. First, let’s take a look at what the keys on a piano looks like (full pianos have a total of 88 keys and the bigger keys are typically white). The YELLOW key in the middle of the keyboard is called “middle C,” which marks the center of the keyboard. The BLUE keys to the right of middle C are all of the notes that are above middle C. These notes make up the treble clef. The RED keys to left of middle C are all of the notes that are below middle C. These notes make up the bass clef.
In order to understand the five-finger position, you need to know how your fingers are numbered. On both hands:
Thumb – First finger (“1”)
Index – Second finger (“2”)
Middle – Third finger (“3”)
Ring – Fourth finger (“4”)
Pinky – Fifth finger (“5”)
To play the keyboard using the five-finger position, place your fingers on the white keys according to the image below. Both thumbs will be placed on the middle C. The red keys are for your left hand, and the blue keys are for your right hand. If you want to continue playing up and down the keyboard, following the smaller numbers in the image below.
